The Belak is a circular medallion traditionally worn on the chest in Timor-Leste. An object of ceremony and cultural significance, it carries associations with identity, bravery and courage. Historically, Belak medallions were also presented to warriors returning from battle in recognition of their bravery.

The circular form has become a recurring symbol in my work. Rather than reproducing the traditional Belak, I rework its form through my own jewellery practice — cutting, texturing, doming and melting precious metals to create contemporary pieces designed to be worn today.

For me, its meaning extends beyond historical bravery. A Belak can mark the quieter forms of courage found in everyday life — change, new beginnings, difficult journeys, achievements and moments worth remembering.
